Where community and canopy grow together.

Just two miles northeast of downtown Knoxville, North Hills is known for its rolling boulevards, tree-filled medians, and strong sense of community. Established in 1927, it remains one of the city’s most distinctive historic neighborhoods.

Much of what defines North Hills today — from its tree-lined boulevards to its community green spaces — has been shaped by decades of care from residents and neighborhood groups alike.

A Neighborhood with Intentional Roots

North Hills was born as one of Knoxville’s early automobile subdivisions. In 1927, brothers George, Hugh, and Carl Fielden founded the North Hills Corporation, purchasing 43 acres and laying out lots around what would become North Hills Boulevard, Fountain Park Boulevard, and Kenilworth Lane. The first house was built that same year, and special design rules were put in place to maintain high standards: homes had to meet size requirements, use certain building materials, and gain approval from the North Hills Corporation’s design board.

Over time, the neighborhood grew steadily. By 1933, about 75 homes were built, and many lots remained. Early residents included professionals, university faculty, and executives — drawn by the mix of convenience and elegance the planners envisioned. Today, the historic district covers roughly 50 acres and features 130 contributing homes in architectural styles that include Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, English Cottage, Minimal Traditional, and Ranch.

In 2008, North Hills was added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognized for the integrity of its design and its role in Knoxville’s suburban growth.

Green Spaces and Everyday Nature

Trees are part of North Hills’ identity. It’s the only neighborhood in Knoxville to be designated as a recognized arboretum. Today, more than 400 individual trees — spanning over 40 labeled species — line the boulevards and frame the neighborhood’s scenery. Dogwoods lead the count with over 200 specimens.

At the heart of the neighborhood is North Hills Park, a pocket park tucked behind houses, featuring a playground, picnic areas, a gazebo, and a walking loop. The simple walking path skirts the park’s edge and connects green spaces in the area. The park is small, but beloved for its privacy and charm, and the Garden Club serves as its park adoptee.

Each spring, the neighborhood celebrates its flowering trees and gardens as part of the Dogwood Trails, offering a walking or driving route through lush, landscaped boulevards and heritage homes.
